Tom Meade, my partner in this blog, is taking a well-earned vacation this week. Being that this is one of the days he normally posts (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), I've decided to catch you up on some things you may have missed in the news.
First there is "Walking While You Work," a story that comes to us via The New York Times, describing how office workers are using treadmills during at least part of the day at their workstations, to help them get off their butts and get the oxygen flowing to their brains. In the above photo, Mutual of Omaha, in Nebraska, has four "walkstations" in its customer-service area. Workers spend part of their shift walking on a treadmill while answering calls. The next story notes that "Exercising with your partner doesn't always work out." While I have written about the benefits of couples working out together, we all have different exercise styles, and sometimes even the closest of couples can't coordinate those styles. The last link I'll offer you comes from our Lifebeat section called, "The Essentials," which talks about the newest exercise guidelines from the federal government -- Thirty minutes a day, five days a week, at a moderate effort, for basic health; double that or make it more intense for more significant health and fitness benefits -- and how they apply to folks who have health limitations, the elderly, pregnant women and kids.
