It's no wonder that Adam Fry began his book Bird Walks In Rhode Island with Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown. For a hardy hike on a winter weekend or just a stroll, the refuge is a natural wonder.

Sheltered by Little Compton on the east and Newport on the west, Sachuest Point offers snug harbor for a variety of wintering sea ducks.

"Many other interesting species can be found here," writes Fry in his book, first published in 1992 by Backcountry Publications. "Migrant hawks, including the scarce peregrine falcon and merlin, and wintering raptors such as the snowy owl and rough-legged hawk are seen intermittently almost every winter."

Fry also includes a warning: "The area is completely overrun with tourists and beach-goers during the summer. Fortunately, it is the winter birds which are the feature here."

About three miles of trails wind through and around the 242-acre refuge between Second and Third Beaches. Generally grassy with some pebbly stretches, they offer sure traction on a flat surface.

If you want to see some spectacular sights, bring the binoculars. Spotting the rare harlequin ducks will make you visit to Sachuest memorable. Yesterday, there were plenty of them within a short stroll from the parking lot. Facing east toward Little Compton, take the path ahead of you and to the left. It leads to Island Rocks where you probably will see small groups of the beautiful birds.
