To say that I know a lot of great men is an understatement. I have befriended boys and men my whole life, and know so many I can count as wonderful fathers, that a Father's Day post seemed completely necessary.

Being that this is a fitness blog, I don't want to go overboard with my own personal stories. But let me just say that my dad, Marty Reinsel, and my husband, Wes Cotter, are among the best dads I have ever known. I wish them a very special Father's Day.

So in honor of all the great dads out there, here's a few ideas for some fun ways to get outside and exercise with your children on Father's Day:

-- Kayaking: This is a Father's Day ritual in my family. Wes takes our two boys out for an afternoon around the inlets of Narraganset Bay.

-- Golf: Sure, Dad may like to do it, but take the kids? Why not -- just make sure it's a public course tolerant of a few errant balls. Borrow clubs from a friend for the day if your children need some.

-- Go fishing: Yes, it's not the most active sport, but walking to the pond and casting are forms of exercise, and most dads love it.

-- Tennis: You can play doubles with your family of four, and all you need is some balls and rackets.

-- Play catch: Throw around a football or baseball, shoot some hoops, or kick the soccer ball around with dad on the lawn.

-- Bike ride: Something the whole family can do together -- you can even get a baby seat for the little one.

-- Walking: If Dad's a little older now, this may be the best form of physical activity. If you do it around your neighborhood Sunday, you get the added bonus of smelling all the backyard barbecues.

If the forecast holds up and rain washes out the above ideas, do some inside exercises like weight lifting or calisthenics.

Or, you can always dance around the house proclaiming your love for him. (And make him get out of the recliner long enough to join you.)

Happy Father's Day
