You're doing well with your fitness routine and now's vacation time. You're going away, relaxing, and you're really not too committed to investing a lot of time and energy in anything but having fun, right? But, you don't want to undo all the good you've done for yourself this year keeping in shape. As I've said before, keeping up your fitness routine when away from home isn't hard if you think ahead. And that's exactly the premise taken by fitness blogger Jimmy Smith when he wrote "27 ways to eat healthy when you travel." Smith was prompted to write this blog after attending a conference, so some of his suggestions applied specifically to taking advantage of the healthy foods available for free at the seminars. I've omitted a few of those, and Smith's dieting tips, as we're not advocating that here. But here's a good portion of that list: *Prepare your food. "Doesn't matter what it is, just do what I did and throw some chicken and broccoli and brown rice and oats in a cooler and you're good to go" Smith says. *"Hijack your hotel room's fridge or rent one so you can bring whatever healthy food options that you want." * "Stay away from the "itis" of being bored during the downtimes, drink a ton of water so you're not snacking." * Wake up and eat breakfast. Don't just wake up for the first activity of the day. * Oatmeal and granola should make up 1/3 of your breakfast along with eggs and fresh fruit. * Don't drink too much coffee. * Try to maintain a sensible eating schedule. Don't go four of five hours without eating a meal. * Don't drink too much the night before. * "Don't be a party-pooper but don't go to bed too late." * Don't workout if you're only away for 1 to 2 days. It'll just cause you to eat more food. * Make sure you bring tons of almonds, macadamia nuts or walnuts. * Eat fiber with "EVERY" meal. * Stay away from soda. * Don't be afraid to eat as healthy as you can at restaurants even when the people around you aren't. * Pre-package your food in Tupperware and bring it with you in a cooler. * You can always bring natural peanut butter or almond butter with you and leave it in your hotel room and go back and forth. * "Individual packets of tuna are a god-send" * If you absolutely must, have a cheat meal towards the end of the trip and during your last meal. * If you have to eat late at night, choose a egg omelet. *.Always order a side of vegetables without the butter. And, my personal favorite: "Bonus tip: Develop the mindset that you're going to eat healthy before you leave your house and don't let anything get in your way." CommentsLeave a comment |

I should print this out before I leave for vacation. I always slip back during vacations b/c I leave with the mindset that it is a "vacation" and I should be able to do whatever I want. haha. Yeah I'm going to try to change that on my next trip and stick with my plan.
