Terri Lawton and one of her pastured cows. Lawton's Family Farm in Foxboro, home of Oake Knoll Ayrshires, will be one of nine farms open for free tours and other activities on Saturday, Sept. 12 as part of Raw Milk Dairy Day organized by the Northeast Organic Farming Association, Massachusetts Chapter (NOFA/Mass). Visitors at all participating farms will have the opportunity to meet the farmers, learn why raw milk tastes so good, why it is such a healthy food and where it comes from. Raw milk is unpasteurized milk. Oake Knoll is located on a 275-year-old family farm. The farm stand is in a century old barn and sells raw milk, vegetables in season and their own Foxboro cheese. It is the last dairy farm in Norfolk County. There will be milking demonstrations, calves to pet and cheese and raw milk sampling from noon to 4 p.m. Terri Lawton, one of the farm owners, used the information she learned as a FDA certified Dairy Inspector to develop a raw milk program that exceeds all legal food safety requirements. "We are excited to participate in Raw Milk Dairy Day," she said. "NOFA does so much work to support raw milk and protect and enhance people's right to choose natural food. We're hoping that visitors to the farm will gain a new understanding of how milk is produced and harvested. Connecting people with delicious food is very important to us. In addition to offering free samples of our creamy, sweet raw milk, we will have veal, hamburger and all-natural hot dogs available all from our holistically managed, grass-fed herd." Many advocates for local, natural foods believe raw milk offers more health benefits than processed milk. In Rhode Island, it is illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption. According to NOFA/Mass raw milk has health, economic and environmental advantages over pasteurized milk. It contains many nutrients essential to human health, and comes complete with companion enzymes and amino acids necessary for the human body to make use of those nutrients. Fresh, raw milk can only be sold directly from the farm in Massachusetts. |
