Bike path breaking news: Fence is open in N. Kingstown

Just got back from a fun and relaxing (although steamy) ride along my favorite bike path -- the Quonset Shared Use Bike Path in North Kingstown -- and discovered some great news.

One of the two gates that remained closed just past the bike path, remnants of the old Quonset Naval base, has been opened. That means smooth sailing for walkers, bikers and the like who are heading between the paved path and the Calf Pasture Point region along the Allen Harbor waterfront.

I snapped this photo when I briefly got off my bike seat.

So, for those of you who were a little reluctant to explore past the 2.5-mile path, I say, go for it. The first fence is easy to move around, the the second one is gone. After that, it's an old concrete road down to the beach. You can't beat it.

Thank you, Pamela Reinsel Cotter, for these bike path observations. I hope to walk the Quonset Path soon. Sounds great.

Observation # 2 interested me especially because I always walk on the left. However, wasn't there some recent silliness in the General Assembly about walkers staying on the right? In fact, I think there was a law passed saying that is what we walkers must do. I decided at once to ignore such a law for my own safety's sake. But what is the story?

Thanks for the kind words, Ruth. As far as I can tell, the RIDOT column on pedestrians on the bike path is the final word -- and correct. You should walk on the left, while cyclists stay to the right.

Here's the link, and thanks again: http://www.projo.com/projocars/content/ca_askdot0712_07-12-09_ACEUDFP_v6.180ef4d.html

Bike path news is fine but why does the local media, ProJo included, seem to fixate on the paths?

Bike paths are not the place for fitness cycling, the roads are. The State paths are great and they have done a very good job on them but we need to remember that cyclist deserve to be and have a right to the roads as well.

I agree with you, Flecha, that the roads should be equally shared by cyclists and motorists. But bike paths are safer for families and others who travel at an easy pace.

And, I often wonder why some bicyclists choose to take to the road right next to the bike path, rather than ride on the safer path? Is it speed, or distance? Can you enlighten me on this?

Bike paths are dangerous. Walkers, skaters, baby stroller pushers, etc all compete for space. Many users are on the incorrect side,do not respond correctly to warnings ( if heard over the ear-buds)and are oblivious to anything outside of their own condition.

Per mile traveled I have many more close calls on bike paths than the roads. It also should be noted I avoid the paths during the warm, busy months.

Also, the speed I like to ride at cannot be accommodated by multi-use paths without endangering and compromising other users.
