Mall walkers in York, Pa. / New York Times photo
Mapmywalk.com, a site that allows its members to chart their walking-fitness progress in various ways, has offered some tips on a way to continue walking even when the temperatures get sweltering. "Summer presents a challenge to walkers. Beautiful weather calls you outside. But, sometimes the oppressive heat, humidity, and overall poor air quality can make it difficult and even dangerous to walk outside," the site notes. Here's its list of free places to take a walk indoors: Shopping malls -- Check your local mall's policy for walkers -- some have mall-walking clubs, and even open early for such groups. School gyms -- Public schools often allow recreational activities when school's out, and some colleges also open their doors to the public -- but check first. Museums -- Ever been to a museum and came home exhausted? It's a great workout, and a great way to get a little education, too. Convention centers -- Most are open to the public, and if not, you can even try their parking garages as a coworker friend of mine does on rainy days. Transportation centers -- Airports and train stations have long halls, and they're interesting places to people-watch. The office -- If you have a large office, take the stairs often, going out of your way for a few extra steps. |
