FinishLineActivityWatersFarmwebthumb.jpgMore than 1,000 people -- many of them children -- are expected to be at the finish line of the Unibank Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge Saturdayat 1 p.m. in Lincoln Woods State Park.

The challenge is a 47.4-mile adventure race that starts in Sutton, Mass., and ends in Lincoln Woods. The race includes three running phases, two paddling stretches and two cycling legs through much of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, says Ranger Barbara Dixon of the National Park Service. The National Park Service works with agencies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to preserve and promote natural and cultural resources in the river valley.

For nine years, the adventure race has promoted recreational opportunities to participants and volunteers. This year's event will expand its finish line celebration to include family recreation.

Saturday, hundreds of kids, age 6 to 12, can participate in the first Children's Challenge in the Grove at Lincoln Woods, said Dixon. Activities will include sack races, face painting, relay races, and a Hula-Hoop contest as the Rhode Island Sstate Pparks celebrate the 100th anniversary of the state's purchase of its first state park, Lincoln Woods.

"I see this event as the beginning of a tradition for family events that are possible because there are no state boundaries in the Blackstone Valley," said Jeannie Hebert, president and CEO of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce. "This event is happening because of the collaborative efforts across the borders."
