The Salt Ponds Coalition (SPC), a Rhode Island conservation group, will sponsor an interpretive kayak trip on Ninigret Pond in Charlestown, Saturday Sept. 26, starting at the Ninigret Refuge boat launch accessed through Ninigret Park on Old Post Road. The group will meet at the launch ramp at 8:30 a.m., and plans is to get underway by 9 a.m.

Rick Lowenthal.JPGDuring the paddle, participants will hear from a variety of experts on pond related topics. Retired marine biologist Art Ganz will talk about the pond environment. Water quality specialist Dick Sartor will discuss sampling programs, and a representative of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will talk about the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. The group will also visit oyster aquaculture sites and learn about their operation.

"These trips are great fun," said Art Ganz, president of Salt Ponds Coalition and founder of the SPC kayak trips. "We will enjoy a leisurely paddle on a beautiful stretch of water and hear from people who know a lot of interesting facts about the ponds."

Paddlers of all abilities are welcome, as are canoes, as long as they are able to safely navigate local conditions. The trip will cover the central part of the pond and will avoid areas of high boat traffic.

SPC recommends participants bring sun block, drinking water, appropriate safety gear, and, of course, the boat and paddle of their choice. Please watch the Web site for cancellations due to foul weather. There is no charge for the trip, but donations of any size to the Abby Aukerman Scholarship fund, which supports marine education, are appreciated.
