In effort to get the world out about the health and well-being benefits of yoga, September has been designated as National Yoga Awareness Month. Part of the event allows participants -- students new to yoga -- to sign up for a free week of yoga classes at participating studios. And hey, as we've noted, Don't let 'fear of the Barbies' stop you from taking a class. In Rhode Island, the Innerlight Center for Yoga at 850 Aquidneck Ave. in Middletown is offering several special classes during the week of Sept. 20-26. According to the event Web site, other locally participating studios include Soma Yoga in Newport and Santosha Yoga Studio & Holistic Center in Cranston. Innerlight also offers a special "Bring a Friend Free" promotion, which allows current Innerlight students to bring a friend to their favorite class at no charge during this one week only. Kim Chandler, director of Innerlight, notes "another opportunity for the curious to experience yoga in a totally safe and comfortable environment" is Saturday, Sept. 26 from 2 until 5 o'clock in the afternoon. "This comprehensive workshop is based on Innerlight's award-winning intro to yoga series recently named 'Best Yoga for Beginners' by Rhode Island Monthly," Chandler said. "All who participate in the workshop will receive a discount if they register for the ongoing Yoga 101 class at that time." On Sunday, Sep. 20 from 3 to 4:30 in the afternoon, Pat Salzillo will lead a 60-minute heated Power Vinyasa Flow at Innerlight, followed by a 30-minute Yoga Nidra. Proceeds from the suggested $10 donation will benefit Recovery Yoga Inc. a non-profit service organization dedicated to healing and personal empowerment through yoga programs in Southeastern Connecticut and Southwestern Rhode Island This event is a local community celebration of Global Mala International Peace Day. The purpose of the Global Mala is to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices on the Fall Equinox to further the cause of the United Nation's International Peace Day.
