Editor's note: Due to a change in event sponsors, the Kids' Tri RI has been rescheduled to Columbus Day weekend. The event now takes place Sunday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m.

img_785053_primary.jpgKids' Tri RI, a triathlon for kids of all abilities, age 4 - 12, with age-appropriate course distances, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. at Rhode Island College.

Organizers want to introduce children to the benefits of sports and a healthy lifestyle.

The focus for the kids' triathlon will be on having fun, testing personal limits, learning good sportsmanship, and achieving personal goals. The atmosphere is family-oriented, according to organizers.

Proceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's efforts to end childhood blood cancers.

A triathlon -- a course of swimming, cycling, and running--tests the mettle of any athlete. The organizers, are also triathletes. They trained in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program.

The event check in will be at the Sandra E. Surdut Swimming Pool at RIC. At check-in, each athlete will be assigned to a "wave," the order in which athletes enter the pool.

After check-in, each athlete must set up his or her equipment (bicycle, helmet, shoes, towel) in the "transition area," to be ready for each change of sport. The athlete will complete the swim, walk to the transition area, put on a bike helmet, mount his or her bicycle, ride the course, return to the transition area, put on sneakers, and begin the run.
