A new way to define who is 'tough'

I'm the mother of two rapidly maturing boys, so we spend a lot of time in my house talking about being "tough."

Worried about how you'll look in braces? That's nothing: Jack Lambert played to a national audience in the NFL missing front teeth.

Think your ears look too big? You could be Evander Holyfield, who got part of his ear bit off by Mike Tyson during a heavy weight title fight.

So with these kind of dinner conversations, I've decided to come up with my own list of tough people they may want to check out as future role models. Some may surprise you.

Chris Arreola: In an obscenity-and-tear-laden interview following his loss by decision in the 10th round to Ukrainian powerhouse Vitali Klitschko, the Mexican-American heavy weight talks about all the training he went through in the quest for a belt, but vows to come back. Here's a big, strong guy crying before his fans and the world out of frustration, but looking as tough as ever.

2. Michelle Obama -- You gotta have thick skin to be in politics, even when you're the first lady. President Barack Obama's best friend, wife and confidant is a strong, smart, beautiful and confident woman who makes a very tough job look easy.

3. David M. Cicilline -- Providence's mayor since 2002 has taken a lot of heat both politically and personally, coming out as a gay man while he was still in the state legislature. Many of his critics stoop to the level of bashing his sexual orientation, but he continues to keep his cool and press on in his work.

4. On the other side of the political spectrum is Helen Glover, the "Survivor" finalist from Portsmouth RI who now hosts a talk-radio show on WHJJ AM in Providence. The daughter of a U.S. Marine, she worked as a water survival instructor for the U.S. Navy. Glover tackles tough topical issues on her show, and is no slouch in the physical fitness area, either.

All of the above people personify what I would call a new kind of tough -- they have strength and grace, but are not afraid to show their emotions. Do you have any nominees?

How about our soldiers who are boots on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'll nominate them. Helen Glover? please. Survivor? please, those people are on vacation. With cameras rolling and producers right on site do you honestly think they'd let anything harmful happen to those people. Our soldiers are in harms way, they are not in a movie or TV series. I'd say they qualify as tough.
